Can Walking Help You Lose Weight?
By: Susanne Myers
Can walking really help you lose weight, or should you stick to exercises and workouts like running that burn a lot more calories? I get that question quite a bit, and simply speaking the answer is yes, walking can definitely help you lose weight.
Mile by mile you burn almost as many calories walking as you do jogging. It will just take you a little longer to walk that mile than it would take you if you were running. Walking also tones your legs and midsection and is overall a great low-impact workout that almost anyone can do.
You don’t need any type of special skills or equipment to get started on a walking workout routine. You already know how to walk, so put on a pair of comfortable shoes and start walking around your neighborhood. Even something as simple as going for one 30-minute walk or two 15-minute walks per day can make a big difference in your overall health and well-being as well as help you walk off those extra pounds.
Not only will you burn about 100 calories for every mile you walk, you will also increase your metabolism and start to develop more muscle mass. Both of these will help you burn more calories throughout the day even when you aren’t working out.
If you are trying to lose weight and feel a food-craving coming on, go for a short walk instead. Exercise, including walking causes your body to release endorphins that will make you feel great and curb your cravings. The walking will also distract you and of course keep you away from the candy jar of fridge.
Combined with eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of lean protein and fresh fruits and vegetables, walking can help you lose weight. You should give it a try.
